We produce certain hormones in our adolescence which have a visible influence on our bodies.

These changes include excess secretion of oils from certain glands. It’s the primary reason for the development of acne in men and appears on the chin, jawline, and sometimes on the forehead.

What causes hormonal acne in men?

More than 85% of men in their teenage years deal with acne due to the over productive sebaceous glands.

From puberty onwards, there is a gradual increase in sex hormones (aka androgen), the oil secretion may be enhanced in some men allowing the growth of bacteria around the surface. This is known as hormonal acne.

The gram-positive Corynebacterium Acnes bacteria has a major role in clogging the skin pores, which ultimately causes pimples to form.

Male Acne in 20s & 30s

For most men, the problem of acne eventually dissolves as they age out and reach their 30s. However, the problem persists for some beyond their 30s.

If you’ve been treating acne through your 30s, it’s best to consult with a doctor on available treatment plans.

Do high levels of testosterone trigger acne?

High testosterone levels in some men have been known to increase sebum production which can lead to acne breakouts and altering the lipid construction of the skin.

When the natural composition of the skin is metamorphosed, the tiny skin pores bulge out in the form of whiteheads. If this bulged out structure comes in contact with air and goes through oxidation, it may transform into a blackhead, making the skin look rash and rugged in appearance.

How to treat hormonal acne in men?

Finding the best treatment for acne can be overwhelming but it’s treatable. Here are the available options to reduce acne quickly and effectively:

1. Topical treatments

A study from 2017 shows that retinoids like (Tazorac and Avita) are effective in treating mild acne

Salicylic acid can also be used if acne has progressed to stubborn blackheads or whiteheads.
Similarly, topical treatments with Benor benzoyl peroxide are effective OTC solutions to treat pus-filled pimples and also mild acne. Both drugs help to kill the bacteria and wash off the excess oil and dead skin cells.

2. Anti-androgen drugs

Spironolactone, Flutamide, and Cyproterone acetate are dermatologically proven to equilibrate sebum production levels by stabilising testosterone.

3. Choose suitable acne products

Products that contain ingredients like azelaic acid, niacinamide, and tretinoin help to fight acne and reduce inflammation.

Anti-acne creams help improve your skin composition and texture. It clears inflamed pores by shredding off the dead cells and releases bacteria trapped within. This helps the skin to develop new cells and come back to its normal state.

4. Adopt a good cleansing routine

Including healthy skin habits goes a long way in reducing acne :

  • Use a gentle, non-reactive cleanser
  • Exfoliate your skin twice a week using a product that suits your skin type
  • Use lukewarm water for exfoliating and cleansing
  • Avoid picking at pimples as it may leave the pores bare, making the face vulnerable to bacteria
  • Use shaving cream and shave in the direction that it’s growing (aka downwards) to avoid reverse anchoring of facial hair, which can clog facial hair pores
  • Avoid over-moisturising, excess product and grease can lead to acne breakouts
  • Try using water-based products

Does hormonal acne go away on its own?

Sometimes it does but if you have oily skin, it’s best treated with effective treatments and a personalised skincare routine.
